As rain falls on the green roof, plants absorb some water while excess runoff is collected in drainage layers below. The collected water can then be stored for reuse or allowed to percolate slowly back into groundwater sources.

Green roofs offer multiple environmental benefits such as reducing stormwater runoff, improving air quality, providing thermal insulation, and creating habitats for birds and insects.
