They work best on low-slope or flat-roofed buildings where weight restrictions need consideration; these lightweight systems typically weigh less than 20 pounds per square foot (PSF), making them ideal for retrofitting existing structures or adding new construction projects without significant reinforcement requirements.

2) Intensive Green Roofs
Intensive green roofs have deeper planting depths and can accommodate a wider range of plant types, including trees and larger shrubs. These systems require more maintenance since they require soil volumes that are similar to traditional gardens; however, they offer the potential for greater biodiversity through their larger plantings with increased species diversity.

Choosing the right green roof system depends on several factors like climate, building size and design, budget constraints, etc.

Installation:

Green roofs can be installed in new construction projects or retrofitting existing structures. The basic steps involved in installation include:

1) Structural Analysis:
A structural engineer should evaluate the building’s structure to determine its weight-bearing capacity. This analysis will determine whether a green roof is feasible or if additional reinforcement is required.

2) Waterproofing:
Waterproofing membranes are placed over the rooftop surface to prevent water from penetrating into the building below.

3) Drainage System:
A drainage layer consisting of gravel or lightweight synthetic material is installed over waterproofing membrane so as to allow excess water to drain away while supporting vegetation growth at same time.

4) Growing Medium:
The growing medium consists of different substrates depending on your choice between extensive or intensive green roof types. It provides essential nutrients for plants and supports their root development while retaining enough moisture & oxygen levels vital for healthy plant growth.

5) Plant Selection:
Plant selection must take into consideration factors such as local climate conditions, sun exposure, wind patterns & seasonality among others

6) Irrigation System:
Most Green Roofs do not need regular watering due to their ability to retain moisture naturally but still it’s important that irrigation systems be included especially during dry spells as part of preventive maintenance routine

Maintenance:

Green roofs require minimal maintenance compared with traditional gardens. However regular upkeep – at least twice annually – helps ensure optimal performance by checking drainage channels aren’t clogged; irrigation lines are functioning properly; inspecting plants for disease or pests infestations & removing dead leaves and debris.

Costs:

Green roofs are a significant investment, but they offer numerous long-term benefits that can offset the initial installation costs. The cost of installing green roofs varies depending on several factors such as roof size, type of system installed, and maintenance requirements among others. Extensive green roof systems typically cost between $10-$20 per square foot while intensive systems range from $30-$50 per square foot or more based on plant selection and irrigation needs.
