Composting Systems: A Memoir Style Post

When I first started thinking about sustainable living, one of the things that struck me was just how much food waste we generate as a society. It’s not just the stuff that goes off in our fridges or the scraps we throw away after meals; it’s also the bits and pieces left over from preparing food, like carrot tops and onion skins. All of this organic matter ends up in landfill sites where it emits methane gas, contributing to climate change.

I knew I wanted to do something about this waste, but wasn’t sure where to start until I discovered composting. Composting is essentially a process of breaking down organic matter into nutrient-rich soil that can be used for gardening or agriculture. It’s a simple idea with huge potential for reducing waste and improving soil health.

As with most things in life, however, there are different ways to go about composting depending on your needs and resources. Here are some of the systems I’ve tried over the years:

1) Traditional backyard composting

This method involves creating a pile of organic matter somewhere outside (usually in your yard), turning it occasionally to aerate it, and waiting several months for it to break down into usable soil. This is probably the most well-known type of composting system and has been around for centuries.

Backyard composting requires little more than an outdoor space (preferably near a water source), some sort of container or structure (like a bin or wire cage) to hold your materials together while they decompose, and regular attention in terms of adding new materials, turning them frequently enough so they don’t get too compacted or dry out completely.

The downside is that backyard composting can take up quite a bit of space (especially if you have limited room outdoors), may attract unwanted critters like rodents if not properly maintained/contained; can also be messy at times when turning materials. Also, the process can take several months to a year before you have usable soil.

2) Vermicomposting

Vermicomposting is essentially composting with worms. This system involves creating a home for worms (usually red wigglers) in a bin or container and feeding them food scraps along with bedding material like shredded paper or cardboard. The worms then break down the organic matter into nutrient-rich castings that can be added to soil for gardening purposes.

The benefits of vermicomposting include its compact size (can be done indoors), faster decomposition time as well as producing high-quality fertilizer which will be great for your plants and gardens. It’s also low maintenance; once the worm population is established, they’ll keep things going on their own! Another good thing about vermicomposting is that it doesn’t produce much odor if properly maintained.

On the downside, vermicomposting does require more initial effort and investment in terms of setting up an appropriate container with proper bedding materials but this can easily be solved by purchasing pre-made bins available online or at local garden stores.

3) Bokashi composting

Bokashi composting works by fermenting organic matter using a special mixture of microorganisms called “effective microbes”. This method results in a pickling-like process where all types of food waste including meat and dairy products are broken down quickly without attracting pests like flies/rodents due to sealed containers used in this method.

This type of composting requires less space than traditional methods since it involves using air-tight containers which also keeps smell under control while reducing pest issues associated with outdoor systems. Additionally, bokashi composting produces usable soil within two weeks compared to other methods that may take months depending on factors such as temperature/humidity levels present during decomposition stages.

One downside could be initially higher costs associated with purchasing bokashi mixtures required for starting off but this cost becomes negligible over time as the mixtures last for several months and is easily replenished by purchasing more online or at local garden stores.

As you can see, there are many ways to compost depending on your needs and resources. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages, but all of them result in reducing waste while producing nutrient-rich soil that can be used to grow healthy plants.

In my personal experience, I have found vermicomposting to be the easiest and most effective way to manage organic waste in my small apartment space. It requires minimal effort in terms of maintenance, produces high-quality fertilizer quickly with no smell issues associated with outdoor systems, and it’s a fun project for kids too! However, if you have a larger space or lots of food scraps (including meat/dairy), then bokashi composting might be the best option due to its fast decomposition rate without attracting pests like rodents/fly/mosquitoes.

Ultimately whichever system you choose; just remember that every little step counts towards making our planet healthier!
