Interview with Composting Expert: Learn How to Turn Your Trash into Treasure

Interview with a Composting Expert

Composting is an effective way to reduce waste and create nutrient-rich soil for gardening. To learn more about this process, we spoke with John Smith, a composting expert.

Q: What is composting?

A: Composting is the process of breaking down organic material such as food scraps, leaves, and grass clippings into nutrient-rich soil that can be used to fertilize plants.

Q: Why should people consider composting?

A: Composting reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills, which produces harmful greenhouse gases. Additionally, using compost in your garden improves soil quality and promotes plant growth while reducing the need for chemical fertilizers.

Q: What materials can be composted?

A: Food scraps like fruit and vegetable peels are great additions to a compost pile. Other items include yard waste like leaves and grass clippings, shredded paper products like newspaper or cardboard boxes, coffee grounds and tea bags.

Q: How do you start a compost pile?

A: Start by finding a suitable location in your backyard where it’s easy to access but also out of sight. Layer brown (carbon) materials such as dried leaves or newspaper with green (nitrogen) materials such as food scraps or fresh grass clippings until you have enough material to form a three-foot tall pile. Add water occasionally so that the pile stays moist but not too wet.

Composting may seem daunting at first but once you get started it becomes an easy habit that benefits both the environment and your garden.
