1) Reducing landfill waste – When organic material is sent to landfills it breaks down anaerobically creating methane gas which contributes to global warming.

Types of Compostable Materials

Green materials include fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea bags, eggshells, grass clippings while Brown materials include dry leaves, twigs or wood chips.

While both green and brown material are compostable it is important to maintain a balance between the two so that your compost pile doesn’t become too acidic which can slow down the decomposition process.

Methods for Home or Community Composting Systems

There are many different ways to set up a home or community composting system depending on the space you have available and how much organic waste you generate. Here are some of the most common methods:

1) Backyard Composting – This method involves creating a pile in an area of your backyard away from direct sunlight with a mixture of greens and browns. It’s best to turn over the pile once every week to aerate it.

2) Vermicomposting – Vermicomposting uses worms such as red wigglers to break down organic matter into nutrient-rich soil amendments. This method requires less space than traditional composting since worms can be kept indoors in containers like plastic bins.

3) Bokashi Composting – A Japanese technique where food waste is fermented using microbes then buried in soil or added directly to plant pots or garden beds.

Best Practices for Proper Use

To ensure that your compost comes out right there are some best practices you should follow including:

1) Keep Your Pile Moist – If your pile isn’t moist enough (but not waterlogged), it will take longer for microorganisms to start breaking down the materials inside which could lead to foul smells developing.

2) Turn Your Pile Regularly – Turning over your pile regularly helps mix up all of its contents giving microorganisms more surface areas on which they can work their magic.

3) Avoid Adding Meat & Dairy Products – These products may attract unwanted pests like rats and flies while taking longer periods for them to decompose properly leading to unpleasant odors developing within your compost pile.

4) Choose the Right Location – Your compost pile should be placed in a secure location away from direct sunlight, and not too close to your house as it may attract unwanted pests like rodents or other wildlife.

5) Monitor Your Compost Pile – It’s important to keep an eye on what’s going into your compost pile because if you add materials that don’t decompose properly, such as plastics or metals, they could damage the environment when spread back into soil.
