Clean Green: How to Make Your Own Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products at Home.

As our society becomes increasingly aware of the impact we have on the environment, many people are looking for ways to live more sustainably. One way to do this is by making your own cleaning products using natural and eco-friendly ingredients.

To learn more about DIY cleaning products, we spoke with Sarah Smith, a sustainability advocate and founder of an eco-living blog.

Q: What inspired you to start making your own cleaning products?

A: I’ve always been interested in living a sustainable lifestyle and reducing waste. When I started researching the ingredients in traditional cleaning products, I was shocked at how many harmful chemicals they contained. Making my own cleaners seemed like a simple and effective way to reduce my exposure to these toxins while also reducing packaging waste.

Q: What are some common household items that can be used as basic ingredients in DIY cleaners?

A: There are so many! Some of my favorites include vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, castile soap, essential oils, and hydrogen peroxide. These ingredients can be mixed together in various combinations to create effective cleaners for different surfaces.

Q: Can you share some recipes for DIY cleaners that readers can try at home?

A: Absolutely! Here are a few easy ones:

All-purpose cleaner:
– 1 cup water
– 1 cup white vinegar
– 10 drops essential oil (e.g. tea tree or lavender)

Mix all ingredients together in a spray bottle and shake well before use.

Glass cleaner:
– 2 cups water
– ¼ cup white vinegar
– 2 tbsp rubbing alcohol

Mix all ingredients together in a spray bottle and shake well before use.

Scouring powder:
– ½ cup baking soda
– ½ cup borax

Mix both powders together and store in an air-tight container. Sprinkle onto surfaces like sinks or tubs and scrub with a damp cloth or sponge.

Q: Are there any surfaces or materials that should not be cleaned with DIY products?

A: Yes, some natural stone surfaces like marble or granite can be damaged by acidic ingredients like vinegar or lemon juice. Also, never mix bleach with any other cleaner as it can produce toxic fumes.

Q: What are some benefits of using DIY cleaners over store-bought ones?

A: Firstly, making your own cleaners is often more cost-effective since you can buy the ingredients in bulk and reuse containers. Additionally, DIY cleaners are typically free of harsh chemicals that can irritate skin and contribute to indoor air pollution. Finally, by reducing packaging waste and avoiding harmful chemicals, you’re doing your part to protect the planet.

In conclusion, making your own cleaning products is a simple way to live more sustainably while also keeping your home clean and healthy. With just a few basic ingredients and some easy recipes, anyone can make the switch from conventional cleaners to eco-friendly alternatives.
