In agriculture, biodegradable mulches made from materials like paper or cornstarch are being increasingly used as alternatives to plastic ones which often end up polluting soil and waterways. In healthcare too there has been a growing demand for medical devices that are biodegradable especially those meant for single-use purposes like sutures or wound dressings. Traditional medical devices made from non-biodegradable plastics can pose serious environmental hazards when disposed of improperly leading to leaching of hazardous substances into water bodies and landfills.
The benefits of biodegradability aren’t just limited to waste management though. It has the potential to reduce our dependency on non-renewable resources by promoting the use of natural ingredients that can degrade easily thus reducing our carbon footprint significantly.
Finally, it’s important we acknowledge that while biodegradability offers us an effective solution towards sustainability it isn’t foolproof nor should we view it as a silver bullet towards solving all our environmental problems.
