To further reduce the ecological impacts associated with using FADS, some countries require fishermen to report their use and specify the number deployed per trip; strict regulations help limit overfishing while ensuring sustainable catch rates that do not harm marine ecosystems.

In many cases, deploying multiple types of devices together can improve overall efficacy while reducing environmental risks associated with relying solely on one method alone; for example, using a combination of FADs and purse seines can help fishermen catch more fish while minimizing bycatch.

In addition to sustainable deployment practices, it is also important to consider the materials used in constructing FADs. For example, some manufacturers now produce bio-based plastics that are made from renewable resources like cornstarch or sugarcane; this reduces reliance on fossil fuels and other non-renewable sources of plastic production.

Another way to reduce environmental impacts is through recycling programs which encourage fishermen to return their traps and nets after use rather than abandoning them at sea where they can pose a threat to marine life.

Finally, education plays an important role in promoting sustainable fishing practices among fishermen. By providing training and resources on best practices for deploying FADS as well as information on the ecological risks associated with overfishing, governments and NGOs can help support responsible stewardship of our oceans’ natural resources.
