Solvents play an essential role in many chemical processes by dissolving reactants and facilitating reaction rates. Unfortunately, most conventional solvents are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that pose health risks and contribute to air pollution. Green solvents are an alternative that is non-toxic, biodegradable, and derived from renewable resources.

Examples of green solvents include ionic liquids, supercritical fluids (CO2), terpenes, and water. Ionic liquids have become popular due to their low volatility, high conductivity, and tunable properties. Supercritical CO2 is a versatile solvent with low toxicity and can be used for various processes such as extraction or purification.

Terpenes are natural compounds found in plants that have excellent solvent properties and can be extracted without the use of harsh chemicals. Water as a solvent has gained popularity due to its abundance in nature, low cost and environmental compatibility.

Green Materials

Green materials refer to materials that are sustainable throughout their lifecycle from production to disposal. They are designed using renewable resources or recycled waste streams instead of fossil fuels which deplete natural resources when extracted.

Bioplastics made from plant biomass such as cornstarch or sugarcane have been gaining momentum in recent years as a green material alternative to traditional plastics made from petrochemicals. Bioplastics biodegrade more quickly than conventional plastics reducing landfills waste.

Another example of green materials is green cement which reduces carbon dioxide emissions by replacing traditional Portland Cement with fly ash –a byproduct of coal-fired power plants- with additional benefits including higher strength values compared with ordinary Portland Cement in some cases.
