How to distinguish high-quality coffee beans: A breakdown of grading systems.

When it comes to coffee, quality is everything. But how do we know the difference between a high-quality bean and one that’s just average? That’s where grading systems come in.

The most common grading system for coffee beans is the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) scale. This system grades coffee beans on a 100-point scale, with scores above 80 considered specialty grade. Beans are evaluated based on factors like flavor, aroma, body, acidity, and sweetness.

But what exactly does each score mean? Here’s a breakdown:

90-100: Outstanding – These are the cream of the crop when it comes to coffee beans. They’re rare and expensive but offer unparalleled flavor profiles.

85-89: Excellent – These beans are still considered specialty grade and have a distinct taste profile worth seeking out.

80-84: Very good – While not quite at the same level as excellent or outstanding beans, these still offer unique flavors that make them stand out from average coffees.

70-79: Average – This is where most commercial-grade coffees fall. While they’re not necessarily bad, they lack the complexity and depth of higher-scoring coffees.

Below 70: Unacceptable – These beans will likely be rejected by buyers due to their poor quality.

Another popular grading system is used by the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI). This system scores coffee based on defects found in each sample during sensory evaluation tests. The CQI uses a 6-point scale with Grade 1 being completely defect-free and Grade 6 having over 120 defects per pound of green coffee.

While both systems focus primarily on taste quality rather than sustainability practices or other ethical considerations surrounding sourcing practices such as Fair Trade certification status or environmentally friendly farming methods; some companies may have additional certifications or ratings for those aspects as well.

So next time you’re shopping for your morning cup of joe, keep an eye out for specialty grade beans with scores above 80 on the SCAA scale or Grade 1 beans from the CQI system. You’ll be sure to taste the difference in every sip.
