Water Retention Systems

Water retention is one of the most critical aspects of a green roof system. It involves storing rainwater on the roof surface for later use by plants or allowing it to evaporate back into the atmosphere. A well-designed water retention system can help maintain healthy vegetation while mitigating stormwater runoff.

There are two types of water retention systems commonly used in green roofs: intensive and extensive.

Intensive Water Retention Systems

Intensive green roofs are those that support deep-rooted vegetation such as trees, shrubs or even agricultural crops. These require more soil depth than extensive green roofs which means more weight on the rooftop. Intensive water retention systems typically involve using a combination of lightweight growing media (soil), irrigation piping network with subsurface drip lines or micro-sprinklers along with root barrier membranes that prevent roots from penetrating waterproofing membrane layers below them.

These advanced systems also include sensors that monitor soil moisture levels so that automated irrigation can be triggered when necessary – ensuring plant health without wasting resources through over-watering.

Extensive Water Retention Systems

On the other hand, extensive green roofs usually incorporate shallow-growing sedum plants or grasses which do not need much rooting space but still require adequate moisture uptake throughout their lifecycle The primary goal of these low-maintenance vegetative covers is not just aesthetics but also environmental benefits like insulation from harsh weather conditions (heat/cold) while at the same time offering excellent stormwater management capabilities by retaining up 30% -50% rainfall.

Drainage Systems

Drainage systems are essential in green roofs to prevent waterlogging, which can damage the underlying waterproofing membrane layer or cause soil compaction. Drainage layers help move excess water away from plant roots, allowing them access to oxygen while also reducing structural loads on buildings.

There are two types of drainage systems: open and closed.

Open Drainage System

An open drainage system is commonly used in extensive green roofs where there is no need for an irrigation network due to the shallow-rooted vegetation’s low-water requirements. An open drainage system involves using a perforated mat placed over the waterproofing layer followed by a high-density plastic sheet that allows water into it but prevents soil particles from clogging up the voids between granules.

This method allows stormwater runoff to be absorbed by the growing media (soil) below, promoting healthy vegetative growth while preventing moisture buildup that could lead to root rot or other fungal diseases.

Closed Drainage System

A Closed drainage system mainly serves Intensive Green Roofs with deep-rooted trees, shrubs or crops. It involves using an impermeable liner material over which a series of perforated pipes or channels are installed on top of granular fill materials like gravel or recycled crushed concrete usually about 15-20 cm thick along with fabric filters that prevent soil particle migration into these void spaces.

This configuration ensures efficient movement of excess water away from plant roots without saturating soils excessively; Plant health remains optimal thanks to well-drained substrates able to maintain appropriate levels of moisture at all times.
