Compostable Packaging: A Sustainable Solution to Reduce Waste and Pollution

As the world becomes more environmentally conscious, people are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint. One popular solution is composting, which allows organic waste to break down naturally and become fertilizer for plants. However, traditional packaging materials like plastic can take centuries to decompose and contribute to pollution. That’s where compostable packaging comes in.

Compostable packaging is made from natural materials that can be broken down by microorganisms into nutrient-rich soil. It’s a sustainable alternative to traditional packaging that offers several benefits for both consumers and the environment. However, not all compostable products are created equal; there are regulations and certifications that ensure they meet specific standards.

Regulations

The Federal Trade Commission regulates environmental marketing claims under the Green Guides, which provide guidelines on how companies can use terms like “compostable” or “biodegradable.” To claim a product is compostable, it must meet certain conditions set forth by ASTM International (formerly known as American Society for Testing and Materials) D6400 or D6868 standards.

ASTM International sets standards for testing products’ biodegradability in a commercial compost facility. The ASTM D6400 standard specifies that the product must degrade at least 60% within 180 days in an industrial composting facility with temperatures between 140°F-160°F (60°C-71°C). Additionally, it must disintegrate into small pieces so it won’t contaminate soil with large fragments of material.

On the other hand, ASTM D6868 applies to home-composting environments where lower temperatures may occur compared to industrial facilities. This standard requires similar criteria as D6400 but over a longer time frame of up to one year.

Certifications

Several organizations offer certification programs for businesses seeking verification that their product meets these requirements: BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute), TUV Austria OK Compost Home/Industrial Standard or Seedling Logo Certification from Din Certco.

BPI is a nonprofit organization that provides third-party certification for compostable products in the US and Canada, following ASTM D6400 or D6868 standards. This certification ensures that the product will break down safely in industrial composting facilities without harming plants or animals.

TUV Austria OK Compost Home/Industrial Standard focuses on European markets and requires compliance with EN 13432, which is similar to ASTM’s D6400 standard. Furthermore, TUV Austria offers a separate certification for home-composting environments known as OK Compost HOME.

The Seedling Logo Certification from Din Certco signifies compliance with EU regulation (EN 13432) and is considered one of the most stringent certifications available. To obtain this logo, a product must meet all criteria outlined in EN 13432, including minimum biodegradability rates and non-toxicity requirements.

Considerations

While compostable packaging may seem like an ideal solution to reduce waste, there are some considerations before using it:

– Not all materials labeled “biodegradable” or “compostable” are certified.
– The breakdown process may take longer than expected if not exposed to optimal conditions (such as temperature).
– Some compostable materials require specific disposal methods; if disposed of incorrectly, they may contaminate recycling streams.
– Composting doesn’t always guarantee a zero-waste solution since it produces greenhouse gas emissions during decomposition processes.
